Behind the Scenes of a Brand Shoot: What Really Happens on the Day (And Why It’s Not As Intimidating As You Think)
If you’ve ever considered booking a brand shoot but thought:
I’ll feel awkward
I’m not photogenic
What if I don’t know what to do?
What if it takes over my whole day?
Well you’re not alone .
Most business owners I work with, whether they are creatives or a service based business feel slightly nervous before their shoot.
So let me walk you through what actually happens behind the scenes of a brand photography session and why you’ll realise it’s actually far more relaxed than you might think.
Before I even arrive.
The shoot doesn’t start when I walk through the door.
It starts with a conversation.
Before the day we’ll discuss:
What your business does (beyond the obvious)
Who you’re trying to attract
Where the images will be used (website, social media, launch, print)
The feeling you want your brand to give.
This means I don’t just turn up and take photos. I arrive with intention.
There will be a loose plan, a shot list and a clear understanding of what we will be creating, so you don’t need to think about it on the day.
Arrival, Creating Calm, Not Pressure
I don’t walk in and immediately start shooting.
I will:
Walk through your space
Observe how the natural light moves
Get a feel for the environment
Have a proper conversation
And more than likely have a cuppa or a coffee if you’re offering.
If it’s a cafe, restaurant and we’ve discussed to take photos whilst open I will see how customers move through your space, if it’s service based business I'll see how you naturally work.
I feel the best brand photography doesn’t feel staged, it feels real, in real time whilst you are working.
The First 20 Minutes Are Always the ‘Warm Up’
Her’s something not many people talk about.
The first few shots are rarely the final selection
They’re the warm-up images.
They help you:
Get comfortable in front of the camera
Adjust to gentle direction
Relax into natural movement
Nobody looks completely natural in the first give minutes and that’s normal.
It all starts to come together when you begin to forget that I am there.
What a Brand Photographer is Really Looking For
During your brand shoot, I’m not just looking at your poses
I’m looking for:
Light that enhances your space
Genuine interaction
Details customers notice
Movement and energy
Atmosphere
Brand photography is not just about stiff posing. It’s about capturing the feeling someone experiences when they walk into your world.
Direction without awkwardness
You will never be left wondering what to do with your hands.
I will guide gently, adjust small things, suggest natural movement.
Sometimes it’s as simple as:
‘‘Turn a little towards the window’’
‘‘Carry on with art you were doing’’
‘‘Laugh -The moment’’
My job is to make you feel as comfortable as possible, enough to just be yourself.
What Happens After The Shoot
After the session, I will carefully select and edit your gallery, so everything feel cohesive and consistent.
The tones match
The lighting flows
The story makes sense
You’ll then have a collection of of images that don’t just look good, but they’ll work together.
Images you can use across:
Your website
Social Media
Marketing Materials
Launch Campaigns
Press Features
No more scrambling for something to post. Brand photography should be seen as a business asset, not just a collection of ‘nice images’
The Truth About Brand Shoots
They’re not meant to be perfect, because nothing is.
They are though meant to feel aligned to you and your business.
When your images reflect the quality, care and personality that is already there in your business, everything feels more confident, from your website to your instagram feed.
And most clients say the same thing afterwards:
‘‘That was nowhere near as scary as a I thought.’’
Ready for a Brand Shoot
If you’ve been putting off booking a brand shoot because it feels intimidating, I promise it doesn’t have to be.
Whether you’re launching, rebranding or you are wanting to show up more confidently online and if you’re based in Huddersfield or surrounding areas and want images that actually reflect the standard of your business, let’s have a chat, no pressure just a conversation.
We can even chat over a coffee, tea or hot chocolate, whatever feels more comfortable rather than email, phone or video.
